Is there anything left in England that’s not for sale?

The title of this item has been stolen from a song by the fantastic, Show of Hands, called Cutthroats, crooks, and conmen!

“There are cutthroats, crooks, and conmen running this jail.

Is there anything left in England that’s not for sale?”

I think this song is great but it was brought back to my mind by something a friend said in the pub a while ago. “Did you know that the binmen own our water board?”

It turned out that what he meant was that the French firm Veolia Environnement, which not only is the water supplier in large parts of England, but also has contracts to empty rubbish for many councils in England.

The largest water company, Thames Water, is owned by a consortium led by an Australian company. Other water companies are part owned by foreign companies.

Electricity supplies in England are even worse.

It doesn’t end there.
